In my past posts I mentioned what foods to avoid in FOODS THAT KILLS YOU and in my post BEST FOODS TO LOSE WEIGHT I mentioned what foods helps to improve weight loss. Now I will give you another option: Juices.
I am not talking about the fruit juices that supermarkets sell, because they are processed food, have added sugar and have too many calories. I am talking about juicing, the processes of making homemade juices from a mix of vegetables and fruits.
A juice extractor is something every house should have because juicing is great for you and your family health. Why?
Well here are some benefits of juicing:
Juicing to weight loss:
Green juices are packed with so many vitamins and minerals, they give your body a lot of benefits, you can start your day with a very low calorie and nutritive green juice. Green juices will make you feel satiety longer and some juices will make your body to burn fat faster. Some people even replace whole meals with juices, but I don´t recommend this because you should see green juices as a part of your daily diet instead of a short-term diet for losing weight.
Helps you to eat your recommended amount of vegetables:
Everybody knows that eating vegetables is good for health because they are packed with so many vitamins and minerals but is very difficult for a normal person to eat their recommended share. If you juice your vegetables, you can easily reach your daily portion of vegetables.
Helps you to absorb the vegetable nutrients in a more efficient way.
When you juice your vegetables your body absorbs the vegetable´s nutrients in 10 to 15 minutes after you consumed them. Also because the vegetables are uncooked all the nutrients are present, and in juicing state, they are very easy to digest in our body, making the body to use the energy that it usually uses in digestion in others things, like the internal body cleanse.
You can eat a large variety of vegetables.
People are used to eating the same meals over and over, you may have one different meal for each weekday, even for two weeks but, after that, you will start eating the same meals. With juicing you can start ingesting vegetables that you usually don´t use with your meals, and with this, you will be getting vitamins and minerals that you usually don´t ingest.
You will help your body to be alkaline.
Have you ever heard of pH levels in our body? Well, pH stands for Potential of Hydrogen and is a way to measure the acidity in our body. It ranges from 0 to 14 being the lowest an acid measure and the higher an alkalize one. A pH of 7 is considered neutral and for our body, the best is to be slighting alkalize, in 7.4 pH.
Why is important to have an alkalizing pH? Because an acidity pH provokes serious health problems, like increased heart rate, fatigue, and confusion. An alkaline pH has several advantages, especially for aged persons, like the protection of bone density and muscle mass loss that can occur to people as they age, also an alkaline diet decreases inflammation and causes an increase in growth hormone production, lowering the risk for hypertension, lowers chronic pain, boosts vitamin absorption and can help to maintain a healthy weight.
And guess what? All vegetables and fruits are alkaline, especially the green ones.
The best way to eat vegetables to help alkalize our body is through juicing because this way you get all the vitamins and minerals.
Helps to prevent Alzheimer.
In a study called the kappa project (1) was found that people that had vegetable juices at least 3 times a week had a 0.24 hazard ratio of Alzheimer, and people who had less than one juice a week had a 0.84 hazard ratio. A very big difference.
One word of advice, juicing is good but the best is when you juice green leaves. Green juices had a bad reputation of tasting awful, but you can mix some fruits or vegetables to enhance the taste like carrots, apples, and oranges. If you mix too many sweet fruits, you may be taking too many calories and sugar.
Juices are meant to be consumed as fresh as possible, but you can store them in the fridge for a maximum of 24 hours, just add half lemon juice so the juice can last longer, especially if you juice apples because apple juice oxidizes very fast and the lemon juice prevents that.
So, what are the benefits of leafy green vegetables? Here are some:
Helps prevent diabetes:
They are rich in magnesium and have a low glycemic index. People that ingest leafy greens vegetables have 9% lower risk of diabetes.
Helps prevent cancer:
Green vegetables contain flavonoids, carotenoids and other powerful antioxidants that have cancer protective properties. The most cancer protection substances are on Cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower.
Helps in the eye´s health:
Dark green leafy vegetables contain Lutein and zeaxanthin. These carotenoids are concentrate in the eye lens and in the retina and have a protective role in the eye against cataract and age degeneration.
I found a lot of juices recipes, here are some of them:
1 peeled pink grapefruit.
2 peeled oranges.
1 head romaine lettuce
Run all ingredients through a juicer.
Good juice, it has a bitter taste, probably because of the grapefruit.
1 cup of spinach
2 celery stalks
4 large leaves of lettuce
1 handful of parsley
1 inch 2.5 cm piece of ginger
A very strong and concentrated flavor. Not too much of juice.
2 mediums apples
2 stalk of celery
1 thumb of ginger root
1 cup of spinach
Good flavor and a lot of quantity of juice.
1 Beet Root
This juice is just DELICIOUS, is not green, is bloody red. The beetroot is the vegetable with more sugar, so you must moderate its intake. Also, it is packed with a lot of nutrients and the Leafs have equal or more nutrients than the root.
2 stalk Celery
Kale 150 gr
Ginger root 1 tumb
I was expecting a more bitter taste, but I was surprised that it tasted like lemonade. Very soft taste.
2 cups of spinach
Ginger root 1 tumb
Good quantity of juice, not a very strong flavor, good juice.
All juices taste a lot better with some ice, I really like them cold.
As you can see, you can make a lot of combinations of leafy greens with apple juice, cucumber juice, and citric juice. You can replace the spinach with kale, lettuce or any other leafy green. Ginger is a great addition to any juice.
Definitely juicing vegetables, leafy green and fruits is an awesome source of nutrients for our body and will greatly improve our health over time. If you haven´t started juicing, please start as soon as you can, your body will thank you for this.
