MAZATLAN: A DAY ON THE BEACH 6

MAZATLAN: A DAY ON THE BEACH

Mazatlan has very large beaches, and the reason why so many people come here is that they want to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea (the big tree “S”).

Yesterday I took my family to one of the best Mazatlan beaches, Playa de la Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island beach).

There are two ways to get there, by boat or by car. The Stone Island is not really an Island; you can go there by car but is a long trip that will take you about half an hour. You take the road as if you have to go to the airport, and almost at the airport, you will have to turn to a side road. This is the same road that takes you to Estrella del Mar Golf Condos and Beach Resort. This is a big tourist resort with its own golf course. After you reach this resort the road will be in a much better condition since is newly made.

Of course, the easiest and fun way to get there is by boat, it will take you 1 minute to get to the Stone Island. First, you have to go to the place where the boats sail of to Stone Island. There are a lot of people that do this trip since they live there, is a small town, and a lot of people have to work in Mazatlan so they come and go.

BOAT TRIP TO STONE ISLAND

BOAT TRIP TO STONE ISLAND

The pier is located in “La Puntilla”, and one ticket grants you a ride on the boat to Stone Island and back. Once you get on the boat you take a sit and have to wear a life-jacket, (the boat driver gives them to all the people inside the boat).

Once you arrive you have to walk a few meters and you will reach the beach. There are a lot of restaurants along the beach, all of them with tables on the sand. There are some tables that are for rent and are not restaurant related. You have the choice of using one of the restaurant´s tables, in which case you have to eat a dish from them, rent a table or if you brought your own umbrella (or not) and just choose your space in the sand and lay down.

The first thing to do once you choose your space is to put sun blocker in your body, because if you don´t you may get nasty sunburns.

Ok, you finally are ready for the beach, so what to do? There are a lot of activities that you can be part of here, I will enlist most of them.

Enjoy the sea

I love to be in the sea water. The reason that I think that this is one of the best Mazatlan beaches is that is family friendly, the ocean waves are not big, there is a lot of space to walk into the ocean and the water won´t reach your chest until a lot of meters inside. The currents are very weak, and the water is crystal clear. Just as a precaution, if you travel with your family and kids you should never leave them alone in the water, not on the beach or in the pool. I have seen very sad accidents that happens when parents don´t pay attention to their kids when they are swimming in the hotel´s pool or in the ocean.

When I was enjoying the ocean water I could see some small fishes swimming among us. You don´t have to worry about sharks since there has been only one incident of this kind in 1980, it was an attack to a female surfer and she survived. (I was very surprised when I found this in a shark attack database http://www.sharkattackdata.com/place/mexico/sinaloa . I had no idea this ever happened here in Mazatlan).

Probably the most dangerous thing that could happen while being in the ocean water is medusa or little stingray sting. They come near shore in some times of the year, but when there is a danger of these creatures the authorities put signs on the beach so people don´t get into the water.  This can happen on any beach of the world.

PEOPLE ON THE BEACH

But enough of the bad things, the water here is clean, the water temperature was very nice, a little hot but I could feel some cold water running at my feet sometimes. The sand grain is very fine, not a granny, it was perfect to stay in the water until you grew scales (for a long time).

Rent a Kayak

There are a lot of aquatic activities. Among them, there is Kayak row. You can rent one end enjoy a great experience rowing a Kayak since the waves are very small here you can row very easily.

Banana boats ride

MAZATLAN BANANA RIDE

BANANA RIDE

One of the favorites activities of tourists and locals. The operators give you a life-jacket that you have to wear at all times, and then you just have to get on the banana boat. It can take up to 10 persons at the same time. A boat tows the banana and gives you a tour around the cove. You can feel the adrenaline rushing through you while jumping the ocean waves, and you will have some incredible sights of the beach and a near island that the banana boat goes around.

Rent a four-wheel motorcycle.

Another activity is to rent a four-wheel motorcycle and have a tour along the long beach (it really is a long beach) or can go and visit the town.

MAZATLAN BEACH FOUR WHEEL MOTORCYCLE

FOUR WHEEL MOTORCYCLE FOR RENT

Take a walk along the beach.

You just can go to the beach and watch all the tourists that come here to enjoy the beach. There are a lot of street vendors and you can buy all sort of things, like souvenirs, or even have a nice peeled mango with some lemon juice and chili powder.

Do a sculpture in the sand.

MAZATLAN SAND CROCODILE SCULPTURE

CROCODILE SCULPTURE

You just can bury your body in the sand (a perfect sculpture?) or you can try and make a sand castle. Look at my pictures of a sand sculpture of a crocodile that some tourists made when I was there.

Write something in the sand

If you are feeling romantic you can write your love´s name in the sand, just like someone did here. Or you just can draw anything you want, since it is not written in stone (it is written in sand and it won`t last long) so just express yourself.

Enjoy a Pony ride.

Sometimes you can find people that offers a ride in little ponies for children, or if you want, a ride in a horse for adults.

Fly a kite.

MAZATLAN FLAYING KITE

KIDS FLYING A KITE

This is the perfect place to fly a kite, but unfortunate there is no kite vendors around here, but I saw some street vendors selling some kind of kite for children. (Is it a plane? Is it a bird? Is it Superman? No, it`s the Batman¡

Enjoy seafood and some beers.

As I told you, there are a lot of restaurants along the beach, try some fish ceviche or shrimps. And the perfect companion to that seafood is a very cold beer.

MAZATLAN FISH CEVICHE

FISH CEVICHE

Buy a coconut.

If you look closely to the panoramic picture you can see the large coast and the coconuts trees that are along the beach. There are a lot of coconuts trees around here, so of course, you can buy coconuts here. First, the vendor will make a hole into the coconut so you can drink it´s water, after that they will open the coconut and take out all the pulp and they serve it with lemon, salt, and chili powder. Very tasty.

MAZATLAN DELICIOUS COCONUT

DELICIOUS COCONUT

Just lay down in the sand.

If you just want to get a beautiful tan, then just lay down in the sand. Don’t forget to apply some sun blocker to your skin.

As you can see, Mazatlan is the perfect beach destiny. There are so many activities that you can do to enjoy your visit to the beach. Also, you can enjoy the best seafood cuisine in Mexico, and if you want to explore around Mazatlan there are some great towns to visit. I`ll finish with a video promoting Mazatlan, and I hope to see you soon here.

Looks like a cool place to visit. How is the crime rate there? As I get older I realize that just because a place looks fun doesn’t mean there aren’t shady people there. Other than that I like this read. I have been to Mexico and used to surf there in the 1980s. Nice waves at Puerto Escondido and San Miquel. Well written post here.

Sinaloa has a very bad fame because drug dealers like el Chapo, but Mazatlan is being protect by government because tourism will fall if violence is present. All tourist sites and beaches have a lot security, and like any other city in the world, there are some dangerous places at night, but nothing uncommon. We live from tourists and they are very well taken care of.

Mazatlan seems like an enjoyable place. I love beaches and as this place is full of beaches, I’m very much interested to visit this place. The images are captivating and they tell their own story!

This is one of the best places to spent a summer or a winter vacation. You can always see tourists on the beach, no matter the season. You will love it when you do come here.
