MAZATLAN BEACHES 8

I will not get tired of saying that I had a lot of good luck to be born in Mazatlan. For you that never have visited us here is a glimpse of our beautiful beaches. In Mazatlan are some of the largest beaches in Mexico, so you can choose the one you like more. Here is the list of Mazatlan Beaches.

Olas Altas:

OLAS ALTAS

OLAS ALTAS

Location: Google Maps

OLAS ALTAS 3 ISLANDS

OLAS ALTAS 3 ISLANDS

Waves: Medium to Big

Sand: A little granulated.

Restaurants: Some restaurants across the avenue of “Paseo Olas Altas”

Overall: This is the oldest of Mazatlán beaches. This has been a tourist’s favorite since 1950. As the name implies Olas Altas (Big Waves) has strong currents and middle to big waves, making this beach one of the surfer’s favorites. You can watch beautiful sunsets from here, and within walking distance, you can find some restaurants that will serve you dinner or if you are thirsty you can have a drink or a cold beer while watching the sunset. Because of its strong currents is not recommended to swim here, but like I said before, it is a great place to surf. Also, you can rent a surf table if you didn`t bring one.

Los Pinitos:

LOS PINITOS BEACH MAZATLAN

PINITOS

Location: Google Maps

Waves: Small to medium.

Sand: Granulated sand with some small rocks.

Restaurants: No

Overall: This is a local favorite. This is a very small beach which is almost always full of people. The sand is granulated but because this beach is in a natural cove the waves are small, this is the reason why a lot of local families bring their children to swim. Past the coven the waves become big, so this is also a good place to surfing. There are no restaurants near, so every family brings its own food and drinks. There are some peddlers where you can buy drinks, coconuts, and food.

Playa Norte:

PLAYA NORTE BEACH MAZATLAN

PLAYA NORTE

Location: Google Maps

Waves: Small to medium.

Sand: Depends location. From fine to a little granulated.

Restaurants: Yes

COCONUT MAZATLAN

COCONUT

Overall: This is the largest beach of Mazatlán.  At the start of this beach, you can find boats that go fishing very early in the day so in the morning people comes here to buy fresh fish. Near the Monumento al Pescador, you can find some restaurants on the beach, where you can enjoy some good seafood as ceviche (shrimp or fish with lemon juice with tomatoes and onion) and grilled fish. Some even offer coconuts, which they open so you can drink the coconut water and then they split the coconut and remove its contents and serve them with lemon and salt.

This is a very popular beach for the locals. Being so large you can always find a spot for you. From here you can watch the sun to go back to the islands in front of the bay in the sunsets. A beautiful sight.

There are a lot of Hotels and restaurants across the Avenida del Mar. There are also small stores where you can buy drinks and snacks for staying on the beach.

The waves are small to medium size.  There are some parts of this beach where you can find strong currents so you must pay attention to the signs that lifeguards put on the beach.

Playa Sábalo:

SABALO BEACH MAZATLAN

SABALO BEACH

Location: Google Maps

SABALO BEACH MAZATLAN

SABALO BEACH

Waves: Small

Sand: Fine grain.

Restaurants: Yes

Overall: This is one of the best beaches in Mazatlán. It is located in The Golden Zone, where most of the mayor Hotels are. The Mazatlán islands (Pajaros, Chivos, Venados) are in front of this beach and this is the nearest point to them. Because the islands protect from most of the waves the length of them are short.

There are a lot of restaurants on beach level where you can order seafood or drinks. Also in high season, there are a lot of activities like banana riding or parachute travel.

This is definitely one of the beaches you must visit with your family when you come here.

Playa Brujas:

PLAYA BRUJAS BEACH MAZATLAN

PLAYA BRUJAS BEACH

Location: Google Maps

Waves: High waves

Sand: Fine grain and a little granulated.

Restaurants: No

Overall: This is also a large beach. Because this beach is not in a bay the ocean waves impact at full capacity. This is also a great place for surfing but is not recommended to swim here because it has strong currents.

There are some big Hotels like the Riu here.

Playa Cerritos:

CERRITOS BEACH

CERRITOS BEACH

Location: Google Maps

Waves: Small

Sand: Fine Grain

Restaurants: Yes

Overall: This is also a very small beach. It is located next to Playa Brujas but is inside a cove. This is why the waves are small. This is a safe place for children to enjoy the ocean water. The sand is made of fine grain. There are some rocks around here so you have to be careful where you walk in.

You can find some restaurants around here, being El Señor Lionso the best. There is an RV park and some suits if you prefer to stay away from people and have a quiet atmosphere.

Playa Isla de la Piedra:

STONE ISLAND MAZATLAN

STONE ISLAND

Location: Google Maps

Waves: Small to medium

Sand: Fine grain.

Restaurants: Yes

Overall: This is also one of the best beaches of Mazatlán. To get here you can buy a ticket in La Puntilla where there are boats that can get you there. The Stone Island (Isla de la Piedra) is not really an island. It is a small peninsula, so you can get here by car, but it is a long trip. There are some pay tours where the people responsible for them takes you there in a Catamaran. They also include some food from the local restaurants at beachside. Click on my article Mazatlan a day on the beach where my family and I spent a full day enjoying the sand, sun, and sea.

The waves here are small because this beach is located in a small cove. This is also a good spot for fishermen. In high season there are also a lot of activities like banana riding and some ATV motorcycle tours.

Here is a video that I made so you can evaluate the beaches in Mazatlán.

As you can see there are a lot of options in Mazatlán to go to a beach and enjoy the ocean, sun, and sand. And please don`t forget your sun blocker.

After your visit to one of the Mazatlan´s beaches, you can go to eat seafood, click on Where to eat the best seafood in Mazatlan, or if you don´t like seafood, here is a list of the Best Mazatlan restaurants

Ran across your page about Mazatlan. The photos are beautiful. I think I like the beach that is described as being in a cove. I’m not into surfing, just snokeling and diving. Thanks for the good info.

Although I prefer beaches with large waves I think playa Sábalo is the beach for me. From the picture I can tell that the Islands offer a great view and the fact that the sand is fine grained is a plus. I don’t particularly like sand that is too granulated or with pebbles.
Playa Cerritos also looks nice and peaceful; A good place to rest and relax. It looks even better in the video which I loved.
